Our George Washington High School Class of 1969 has many creative classmates. One of our most unique artists is Jeremy “Jerry” Potts. His career story is an excellent example of turning a hobby into a career.

Jeremy Potts GW Class of 1969

Jerry joined the Navy and was active for four years after high school during the Vietnam War. He served as a plain captain (aircraft hydraulic and airframe mechanic) during three years of service on the flight deck of aircraft carriers, one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

After the Navy, he drove an 18-wheeler to support his family while doing artwork and engraving as a hobby. In 1979, he opened an engraving and graphic arts business and started engraving on motorcycle parts.

He is very well-known in the motorcycle and automotive industry because he developed tools that allowed him to do something many experts believe could not. He is the only engraver in the world engraving through chrome! The name Steel Tattoos came from an article in Easyrider magazine for his work on motorcycles.

He is also well-known for full-color engraved automotive art on metal. Besides the pictures accompanying this story, you can see more examples of his artwork at www.facebook/steeltattoos.

He has engraved for people all over the world and feels very lucky to make a living doing the art he loves. He has no plans to retire. You can reach him at steeltattoos@yahoo.com.
